PSD will not open: the five causes and what to ask for
A PSD that will not open is usually one of five things: the wrong kind of file, a huge file, an old or unusual save mode, a broken download, or a tool that does not read PSD at all. How to tell, and what to ask the sender for.

Open it in the browser
- Go to the Editor and drop the file on Open a photo, or press Ctrl+O.
- If it opens, an Opened report may list what was kept, changed or left out. That report is the answer to "what happened to my file".
- If it does not open, note the message and the file size, and send the sender the row from the table above that matches.
How do I open a PSB file?
PSB is the large-document variant and most tools outside Photoshop do not read it. Ask for the file saved as PSD; if it is over 30,000 px on a side, ask for a smaller version or a flattened copy plus the layers you need.
The PSD opens but everything is on one layer. Why?
It was saved without Maximize compatibility, or your tool only reads the flattened preview. Ask for a re-save with compatibility on, and open it in an editor that reads layers.
