Make a photo look professional in five moves
Most amateur photos are off in the same five ways: tilted, dull, the wrong colour temperature, oversaturated or flat colour, and small distractions. Fix those in order and the photo reads as professional.

Every adjustment is a layer, so you can switch any of them off to compare, lower its opacity if it went too far, or paint its mask to apply it to part of the photo only. Hold the backslash key (\) to see the photo before adjustments and filters.
Two extras that often help
- Brighten the subject: select it (Select, Subject), add a Curves adjustment with the Brighten preset, then Layer, Layer mask, Add layer mask so it only brightens the selection.
- A gentle vignette: Filter, Enhance, Vignette at a low strength pulls the eye inward. If you notice it, it is too strong.
What makes photos look amateur
- Saturation pushed until skin turns orange.
- HDR-style clarity with halos around edges.
- Heavy vignettes and filters on a photo that was not fixed first.
- Crooked horizons. Nothing else is noticed as fast.
What is the single biggest improvement?
Levels: setting a true black and a true white. Most dull photos have neither, and fixing it takes ten seconds.
Vibrance or Saturation?
Vibrance. It boosts muted colours more than strong ones and protects skin tones. Saturation boosts everything equally and quickly looks fake.
