Use Voidcanvas as an app on your computer

The desktop app is the same Voidcanvas, installed, with your designs saved as .void files in a folder you own. It works offline and opens PSDs from your file browser.

Voidcanvas runs in your browser and as an app you install. The app has every feature the browser version has, costs nothing, and needs no account. What changes is where your work lives: in the app, every design you save is a real file in a folder on your computer.

Your Voidcanvas folder

The app keeps your designs in a folder called Voidcanvas inside Documents. The first time you press Ctrl+S on a design, it is saved there as a .void file named after the design, and Saved to the file name appears. After that, Ctrl+S updates the same file. The app also writes the file when you quit, and about once a minute while you work.

The start screen lists the files in the folder under Your Voidcanvas folder, newest first, with a preview of each. Click one to open it. Show folder opens the folder in Finder or File Explorer. Change folder picks a different one.

To save somewhere else, use File, Save to disk… (Ctrl+Shift+S). The design then stays linked to that file instead.

Opening files

  • Double-click a .void file in Finder or File Explorer, or drag it onto the app window. It opens linked to that file, so Ctrl+S saves back to it.
  • Right-click a PSD and choose Open with, Voidcanvas. On Windows, Voidcanvas becomes the default app for PSDs only if no other app already is, so Photoshop keeps its files.
  • File, Open… (Ctrl+O) opens the system file window, starting in your Voidcanvas folder.

Offline

The whole app, the 16 built-in fonts and these Learn pages are on your computer, so you can work without a connection. Other Google Fonts, and Remove background the first time you use it, still need the internet.

Updates

On Windows and Linux (AppImage), new versions download in the background. When one is ready you see Voidcanvas and the version number is ready. It installs when you quit. Until the Mac app is signed, Mac users download new versions from the download page.

Privacy

Nothing changes: your designs stay on your computer, and the app sends the same anonymous usage counts as the browser version, which you can turn off in Your privacy. In a private session the app writes nothing to your Voidcanvas folder.
